Cold Open
Dawn spills over the course, a soft mist weaving through emerald fairways as the first light of Independence Day ignites the dew in a quiet blaze of color. The air hums with the promise of freedom, stirred by a breeze that carries the faint echo of distant celebrations. Fireworks are yet to bloom, and anthems yet to ring. Shadows stretch across bunkers, framing greens where every putt feels like a nod to liberty’s pursuit. The flag on the pin ripples gently, red, white, and blue catching the morning sun. This is golf on the Fourth of July; a cinematic stage where each swing carves a story of precision, passion, and quiet patriotism under an endless summer sky.
Why Dressing Well Matters
As a kid, my parents forced me to wear nice clothes to school. The school didn’t have a dress code, but I wore a collared shirt and khaki pants every day. Traumatizing? Yep, but it instilled an important lesson: what you wear matters. That early sartorial discipline, though it felt like a straitjacket at the time, taught me that clothing isn’t just about covering up, it’s a language. It shapes how you move through the world and how the world sees you.
Consciously or not, how you dress impacts your actions, thoughts, and status in the eyes of others. The power of a well-fitting suit in a business setting, or even a tucked-in Oxford cloth button-down while running errands, does wonders. In a world that’s increasingly casual, especially in golf, dressing well is an easy way to differentiate yourself and elevate your status. 20 handicap? Doesn’t matter if you look put together. A sharp outfit signals intention, confidence, and respect for the game, even if your swing’s a work in progress.
The gravitational center of golf is slowly getting pulled into the black hole of streetwear, and this makes me wince. Baggy cargos and loud sneakers might feel comfortable, but they erode the game’s timeless elegance. Golf has always been a sport of precision and tradition, and your attire should reflect that. A crisp polo, tailored pants, and polished shoes don’t just honor the course, they make you feel like you belong. It’s not about gatekeeping or elitism; it’s about respecting the setting and yourself. When you dress with care, you stand a little taller, swing a little smoother, and carry yourself with a quiet authority that transcends your scorecard.
Beyond golf, dressing well is a universal edge, as studies have shown professional attire boosts perceptions of competence and trustworthiness. It’s not superficial, it’s psychology. People form impressions in seconds, and your outfit sets the tone before you say a word. But it’s not just about others. Choosing clothes that fit well and feel like you is a form of self-respect. It’s a daily ritual that says, “I’m worth the effort.” That mindset shifts how you tackle challenges, from a client meeting to a bunker shot. And no, it doesn’t require a fortune, as I’ve laid out here How to Dress Well on a Budget.
Dressing well honors the people and places around you. It shows you’ve thought about the context, whether it’s a boardroom, a fairway, or a first date. In a world that’s trending toward sloppiness, taking the time to look sharp is a quiet rebellion. It’s a way to stand out, not by shouting, but by showing up as your best self.

The Invite List - Tips for Playing at Private Clubs
I hosted a few guys last year at my club. One of them was pretty famous outside of the US (athlete) and 2 of his buddies. Long story on how that came to be for another time. Anyway, one of the buddies also happened to be his golf coach, and that guy was a character. He told me he operated a golf academy in Saudi Arabia? Again. A story for another time.
Regardless, the coach brought five training aids for the Athlete’s 30-minute warm-up on the range, making the Athlete look like they were hooked up to a hospital EKG machine. This is not how to behave as a guest at a country club, regardless of who you are.
