Welcome to the first edition of the BowTiedGolf newsletter. We’ll be covering a variety of topics — basically whatever I feel like writing about at any given moment. See you at the end.
My purpose with this post is to educate guys who want to look good consistently, and build a wardrobe that travels from the office to the golf course with ease. If this is not you, please unsubscribe below, as this newsletter and twitter account is not for you.
The rapid growth of the game has led to some interesting developments in the golf fashion world. Big letter hats, white belts, t shirts are all commonplace at municipal and semi-private clubs these days. Seeing images of 50 year olds in Malbon makes me want to gouge my eyes out. So it goes. I wrote a brief X post aligning the recent explosion of golf with raising cheap VC money. I think it remains accurate, and I will likely cover that issuue on here. The game is outgrowing it’s traditions, and I’m here to do my part to reverse the trend.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. How do I dress for both the office and golf course? I buy from 2-3 high quality brands, and wear them everyday. I will tier them below.
Tier 1 - Close your eyes, can’t go wrong:
Need I say more? The undisputed king of high-quality golf wear. It’s so good, you can wear it to the office as well.
Also very high quality. Their fit is not as good as H&B for slim guys, but you can’t go wrong with the crown.
Better for the office than the golf course. High quality stuff at reasonable price points
Tier 2 - Proceed with Caution
Some decent basics, but also some awful patterns/camo stuff that will award you some discerning looks from members at top-tier clubs. Basic stuff is OK and BTG approved.
If you want a comfortable shirt with an awful collar. Best for the beach.
Its ok, collars aren’t great and their tech material falls well short of HB and PM.
More of a California/Midwest golf shirt. Some good options, but some god-awful patterns. Stick to the simple stripes, if you can.
Tier 3 - Avoid
Malbon Golf
Won’t even link it. Disgusting, shrink the game.
Lululemon
Seriously?
Radry Golf
Radmor Golf?
The avoid list could go on for much longer, but I got depressed when I was looking at all of the brands, and I prefer to focus on the positives.
The point is to build a wardrobe that looks good across locations. Can you take a girl out on a nice date right after hitting 30 minutes of balls at your country club without changing? Thats the criteria.
Keep it very simple to start. Light blue shirt, a belt from your club, khaki shorts or pants. White footjoy shoes. You can step onto any golf course in the world with that and look good.
Until next time,
